Did you know this about painkillers?

  • Many drugs and medicines cause negative side effects that occur even if they are used as prescribed. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, 22 million people each year suffer from these negative side effects.
  • One of the recent life-threatening examples is the painkiller Vioxx® by Merck & Co. At least 7,875 cases have been filed against Merck due to the risk of heart attack, stroke, and sudden death in people taking Vioxx® for pain relief.
  • A study at the Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital revealed a striking finding: Painkillers containing chemicals, such as rofecoxib, celecoxib and valdecoxib slow down your body’s own mechanisms that reduce inflammation and pain. Thus, the more you use these painkillers, the more you become dependent on them because they destroy your body’s natural mechanisms to reduce pain.
  • Researchers at Canada's McMaster University Health Science Centre were shocked to see that a commonly used painkiller, ibuprofen, (e.g. Motrin®, Advil®, Liqui-gels® and Ibu-Tab 200®), can cause blood loss in the intestines of totally healthy persons by as much as an entire cup.
  • Tylenol (acetaminophen) is the most common cause of acute liver failure in the United States. Some patients who took less than 4 grams of acetaminophen daily developed liver failure. Rather than causing chronic illness, acetaminophen can have an immediate and devastating effect on the liver. (Hepatology)
  • Tylenol is not only dangerous for the liver but the kidneys as well. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, taking more than one tablet a day of Tylenol or 1,000 tablets over an extended period doubles the risk of kidney damage. Each year, approximately 10% of new cases of chronic kidney failure are caused by Tylenol and aspirin. As a result, about 15% of the people on dialysis today are there because of the damage that Tylenol or aspirin has done to their kidneys.
  • As a whole, over-the-counter painkillers are responsible for killing over 40,000 Americans each year. That includes ibuprofen, aspirin, Tylenol, and other painkillers.
